Best Foot Forward

So our fourth tournament of the season has come and gone...only two tournaments left! It truly is amazing how fast this season is flying by. We started out at Poway, our show just finished, getting the feel for competition and our potential this year. RBV's performance was a chance for us to see hard work pay off, and learn from the constructive criticism provided by the judges. Our own tournament provided a great opportunity to perform on our own turf, for an amazingly supportive and enthusiastic audience, without the pressure of competition. At Mira Mesa, the shows proved that all the bands have worked hard and improved, including us. This time, however, we got a reality check in terms of where we stand. We've come out on top in every tournament this season...except Mira Mesa (albeit we lost by a very small margin). That's not to say that we had bad show, haven't improved, or that we aren't a strong, talented group. To be sure, we have definitely improved as weeks have gone by. But, of course, so has everyone else. And maybe our competition has improved at a greater rate than we have.

Someone once said that the band that rehearses the best performs the best. There are few, if any, among us that can honestly say that during each rehearsal these past weeks, they have done everything in their power to improve and stay focused. I know that I haven't been completely committed to every rehearsal. We are an amazing group, with the best people, an amazing show, and strong set of directors and techs to lead us. It's time for each of us to individually commit to putting everything into rehearsals, all the time. We know what we need to do...so let's put our best foot forward, and try our best to get there.

I know that winning isn't everything, and that those plastic trophies that grace our piano aren't what our goal should be. But what does matter is that we do our best, and perform to our greatest potential, regardless of the trophies that we win or don't win in the end. And we aren't quite there yet.

Sundevils, we have two more chances to show everyone what Mt Carmel is about. So as we prepare these next couple weeks, for the final and biggest two tournaments of our season, think about how you want to end this season and what it takes to get there. Take the outcome of Mira Mesa Tournament as a sign of where we are, and where we need to be. We all need to work harder so that we can truly shine when we march onto the field in competition. Let's crescendo starting right now, and end this season stronger than ever.
