Westview

Westview has come and gone, with both a validation of the hard work that we have put in, and a realization that winning will not be easy. Tying Rancho Bernardo even though we won one caption to their two shows that our show has what it takes to win at Arcadia, but not without hours of work that we still need to devote to cleaning both music and drill. It is early but I truthfully believe that we have an amazing opportunity to do something that this program hasn’t done in a long time- come away with grand sweeps. However, like I stated earlier, it will require a lot of effort both on and off the field. It is time to start bunkering down and learning the nuances of our music, and adjusting our visual presentation. It is no longer ok to guess at a note or a drill set. This band is no longer about the individual, it is about us, as a band. We are the Marching Sundevils. When an individual makes a mistake, shows up late, or doesn’t show up at all, it affects everyone else. When an individual holds over on a note during competition, it no longer matters how clean everyone else was, all everyone remembers was the person that held over. We are only as strong as our weakest link, and as a collective, we are strongest when we work together to tell a story on that field.

To tell everyone the truth, the leaders, myself and the directors only can make you do so much. We can tell you to do at school, but once you leave, the only person that has control over yourself is you. We cannot force you to practice, run over the drill in your head, or march once you leave school, yet for us to reach the level we need to be at to win, everyone needs to do all of those things on their own time.

Let your friends know. We are in this together- come good or bad. As a program, we have a whole lot of tradition to uphold. We have the legacies of past bands and past legends to defend. We’ve had both our share of victory and defeat, and you know what? Those bands that won were no different than us except that they had a different year on their picture. I challenge you to look closely on the walls in the back of the band room. Every single person in every single one of those pictures wanted to win, and with no year excepted, the difference between them and 2nd place was the will to go the extra mile.

For Now,
