A “Tradition of Excellence” Continues

Festival"One More Time." Every Sundevil who has passed through the Mount Carmel Band program knows what those three words mean....we will be playing it ten more times...or maybe twenty...or maybe till perfection has been exceeded. This year the Mount Carmel Wind Ensemble has especially come to know and love this phrase that the Director of Bands, Mr. Warren Torns, has used every so frequently in daily rehearsal. For this year we have been chosen to attend the Bands of America National Concert Band Festival in Indianapolis, Indiana.  Now the Festival is more of a display of musical excellence rather than an actual competition. Only the top sixteen bands are admitted nation-wide, through a vigorous audition process, and Mount Carmel is the only band that has been chosen to represent the state of California. The Festival consists of each band flying out to Indiana, playing their selected repertoire and then being critiqued by some of the most prestigious names in the music world today. All-in-all it is a Festival held to challenge the top high school musicians in the country and bring them to new heights and levels of excellence. Auditions were also held for the National Honor Band and Orchestra, in which the best from each of the selected groups come together to form one band. This year we were blessed to have four Sundevils represent our band for this high honor. They include: Melanie Kreig on trumpet, Stephen Wu on bassoon, and Scotty Michel and Matt Waters on trombone. The amount of work and grueling hours of practice in preparation for this performance has not been easy for any of us to say the least. And we will most likely be hearing "One More Time" a thousand more times before February; however, in the end it will all be worth it. For this is a once in lifetime opportunity to display to America Mount Carmel's longstanding "Tradition of Excellence."
